This highly unusual pair of tables have highly figured mahogany tops, which have faded and developed a rich patination, cross-banded in rosewood and with a gilded flute to each edge.
Below, the frieze, which is veneered in similarly figured mahogany, is decorated with an inlaid ebony line and a painted lion's head. The tables supported on cabriole legs with a gilt-metal and bronzed pharaoh's head to the top of each leg.
The tables epitomize the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth century fascination for Egyptian motifs. In no small part the consequence of Napoleon's campaigns in Egypt in 1798. In particular, the profusely illustrated 'Voyage dans la Haute et dans la Basse Egypte' by the artist Denon, who accompanied Napoleon to Egypt. The book was published in 1802 and was very quickly translated into English, becoming the latest vogue with designers, cabinet makers and their clients.
