George III Satinwood Card Tables

SOLD - A Pair of Georgian Satinwood Card Tables

Height: 28 ½" 72.5cm
Width: 39" 100.5cm
Depth: 19 ½" 49.5cm

An impressive pair of George III satinwood card tables with the most superb tops having an inlaid border of scrolling foliage between two bands of tulipwood cross-banding. To the inside of the border is an inlaid shell, which is unusually bold, and further scrolling foliage with cornucopia, bell flowers and anthemions.

The tables are an outstanding colour and the inlay of the finest quality. Comparisons may be drawn between the inlay on these tables and the inlay on a pair of tables made by Thomas Chippendale for Newby Hall.

The shell at the centre is similarly bold, the pattern of inlay between the shell and the outer border similar as is the scrolling foliage between the two rings of tulipwood crossbanding. One additional similarity is the oval cartouche to each top. On these tables it is filled with a panel of rosewood, but on the Newby Hall tables it is inlaid with a classical figure.
