SOLD - A George III Parquetry Pembroke Table
Height: 28" 71cm
Width: 46" 117cm
Depth: 36" 91cm
Being of rectangular form with rounded drop flaps, the top elaborately inlaid with an interlaced lattice of satinwood set against a Brazilian rosewood background. The frieze similarly inlaid and opening to reveal a drawer at each end of the table. To the top of each leg is an inlaid diamond motif above inlaid panels to each side of each leg. The table standing on its original chased brass box castors.
The design of this exceptional table is, to the best of our knowledge, without precedent and utterly unique. When originally made, this table would have been a riot of colours. Orange, green, purple, yellow, and red to name a few. 'Thankfully', over the last two hundred years, the table's colours have mellowed and the wood has developed a rich patination.
The quality of the workmanship is no less exceptional than the design. The inlay is precisely cut and worked, the castors are amongst the best we have ever seen and the degree of finish could not be higher. The table is completely free standing, in other words there is no front and no back to this table. Every angle or side is treated with the same high regard. Even the insides of the legs are inlaid in exactly the same way as the front and sides. This is something that one only sees on the very finest pieces.
