An Early Nineteenth Century Chinese Export Lacquer Six-Fold Screen
The screen is richly decorated to one side with figures at various pursuits, pagodas, boats and markets within an extensive landscape. On the other side there is similar decoration all within a border of writhing dragons chasing flaming pearls.
It is interesting to note that the style of decoration on this screen coincides with the inclusion of similar scenes and prominent dragons seen on porcelain of the period of 1810 to 1820.
Furthermore the mythological creatures seen here had not previously been included in the decoration of export porcelain or lacquer. However, by this time the East India Company was no longer exporting Chinese decorative arts and it was left to private traders to do so on their own account. These individuals had no desire to have everything be a copy of a European model or design.
