Eighteenth Century Polychrome & Lacquer Screen

SOLD - A Highly Decorative and Extremely Rare Eighteenth Century Polychrome & Lacquer Screen

The screen, of Portuguese or Dutch colonial origin, is profusely decorated with stylized birds, baskets of flowers and European figures in an oriental setting. This latter feature being particularly rare. The whole screen bordered by scrolling foliage on a green lacquered ground whilst the reverse of the screen is decorated with flowers on a red ground.

This screen was originally one of a pair. The other screen, known as the 'Wrotham Screen' was in the collection of the Earl of Strafford at Wrotham Park, exhibited at the English Decorative Arts Exhibition at Landsdowne House in 1929, and subsequently sold by Apter-Fredericks in 1994.

This screen was thought to have been in the possession of Phillip John Miles at Leigh Court, Bristol. Sold by Apter-Fredericks in 1991 to the fashion designer Valentino.
