SOLD - A Regency Period Mahogany Canterbury to a Design by George Smith

The canterbury having pierced sides and divides in the gothic style, interspersed with reeding. Below is a single drawer resting on four turned tapering legs which terminate in original brass castors.
The canterbury being particularly attractive, a very good colour, and its design rather unusual.

The design taken from plate 79 of George Smith's 'A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture' Dated 1807.
Interestingly, the design and the finished article do differ. We would argue that the finished article is more satisfactory than the design. This is particularly true of the divides. In the finished article they match the sides, but in the design they are left plain.
We would suggest that far from this canterbury having been made by someone copying Smith's design. It is more likely that Smith himself made it and improved upon his original drawing.
