The superb lacquer on both the front and the rear of this clock would suggest it may have sat on a table in the middle of a room so it could be admired on all sides, or on a large mantle piece with a mirror behind to reflect the detail. . The back plate of the original three train movement is engraved with a floral design.

Giles Grendey and other leading workshops in london produced these wonderful cases for a number of top makers. The Cabrier family was a well known clock making dynasty active in london in the early 18th century. They were all members of the clockmakers company.

By repute, they produced a pair of lacquered table clocks for the King of Nepal and another now in the royal collection in Sweden.
