NEO-CLASSICISM
Neo-classicism came to fruition in Britain on the return from Rome of its key promoters, namely Robert Adam, William Chambers and James Stuart in the mid 1750s.
As a style, its roots were firmly imbedded in the Classical tradition of Ancient Rome and Greece, somewhat aided by the important re-discovery of the burial sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii.
Neo-classic design marked a sharp contrast to the lively, naturalistic motifs of the Rococo. Instead, the decorative architectural schemes drawn up by Robert Adam, looked to the stucco reliefs to be found in ancient Roman sites such as Nero's Tomb and Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli. Adam interpreted this classical vocabulary using his own distinctive language.
