A Very Rare Pair of Cloisonné Cranes
A Very Rare Pair of Cloisonné Cranes
Standing on shaped bronze stands. The birds have long curving necks, red crests and open gilt-bronze beaks revealing their tongues; their wings are folded neatly and are decorated in various coloured enamels on a white ground; and their legs and clawed feet are bronze.

According to Ancient Daoist Philosophy, the Crane is a symbol of Longevity. Supposed to reach a fabulous age and holding the secret of eternal youth, it further more encapsulates wisdom and good luck. Cranes such as these often flanked the Imperial thrones of the Forbidden City, where they were used as incense burners and giving the hope that the dynasty would survive many thousands of years.
