An Important George III Mahogany Library Table of Superb Colour & Quality

Height: 31" 79cm
Width: 60" 152.5cm
Depth: 37 ½" 95.5cm

The writing table has a leather lined surface with a cross-banded border and moulded edge. The frieze, fitted with concealed drawers, is carved with a 'greek-key' ribbon that is sunk in tablets; while brass bas-reliefs of ring-bearing lions are tied at its rounded 'columnar' corners. It stands on four legs, comprising herm-tapered pillars capped by Grecian palm-wrapped urns, and with fluting created by bas-relief ribbons running the length of each leg before terminating in original brass castors.

English, Circa 1810

Provenance
Mrs Charles Wrightsman

Other tables related to the design of the present table are recorded:
M. Harris & Sons, A Catalogue and Index of Old Furniture and Works of Decorative Art, London, circa 1930, Part III, p. 406, no. F 20465, from the collection of Lt. Col. S. G. Goldschmidt, Kerfield House, Ollerton, Cheshire. It is interesting to note, this table is identical to ours apart from the direction of the greek key decoration. It is conjecture, but it is possible that they might have been made as a pair.
Christopher Hussey, English Country Houses Late Georgian 188-1840, London, 1955, p. 228, fig 439, in the Study, Scotney Castle, Kent.
