Fine period dining tables have become increasingly difficult to find. This example is all the rarer for being an early table, as can be determined by the smooth edge to the top and the 'gun-barrel' column. The fact that the columns are supported on four splayed legs adds to the table's stability.

Interestingly, whilst the width of a table needed to be sufficient to ensure that a long table was correctly proportioned and not too narrow, it also had a great deal to do with the need to display grand centerpieces and candelabra on the table, as was the fashion at that time.
