GILES GRENDEY

Grendey was born in Gloucestershire in 1693 and, aged 16, came to London as an apprentice to William Sherborne. His first commission was for Richard Hoare of Barn Elmes. Hoare later married the heiress to Stourhead to which Grendey subsequently supplied furnishings. Possibly his best known commission was for a suite of red japanned furniture supplied to the Duke of Infantado at the Castle of Lazcano, Spain. This consisted of a day bed, six armchairs and twenty single chairs.
