A George II Carved Giltwood Mirror Attributed to Benjamin Goodison
The original beveled plate in a frame decorated with vitruvian scroll and egg and dart motifs. To the top is a carved shell crest within scrolling foliage and 'swan-neck' style pediment mirrored below by a shaped apron with scrolling foliage and candle arms.
English, Circa 1730
ATTRIBUTION.
This mirror is undoubtedly by Benjamin Goodison. It may be compared to a mirror at Hampton Court Palace, which was one of three made by Goodison for Frederick, Prince of Wales in 1732-33, and another also at the Palace and attributed to Goodison. Each of the mirrors has the same sequence of motifs around the mirror plate, including the somewhat unusual Vitruvian Scroll motif.
