ATTRIBUTION
The quality of workmanship on this box is exceptionally high and is very reminiscent of the work carried out by William Gates on a pair of commodes in the Royal collection. Gates supplied this pair of commodes for George IV's apartments in 1781. He had succeeded John Bradburn in his post of cabinet-maker to the Great Wardrobe and worked for the crown from 1777 to 1790. He was particularly extensively patronised by George IV, until the latter moved to Carlton House in 1783.
