An Exceptional George I Burr Walnut Card Table
Height: 28.25" 72cm
Width: 34" 86cm
Depth: 17" 43cm
The card table, which has a concertina action, has a rectangular shaped top which breaks forward over each of the front legs to create an inverted breakfront shape. When opened the concertina action allows each leg to be in each corner and for there to be a candle stand above each leg.
The top, which like the frieze is veneered in particularly well figured burr walnut, is also cross-banded and has herring-bone inlay. The top supported on a very well proportioned frieze which in turn is supported on four cabriole legs each terminating in the most unusual paw-feet and each carved with the most exceptional shell and foliage to each knee.
The depth, quality and crispness of the carving is striking. It is extremely rare to see carving of this nature and in particular to see it on an early table.
