SOLD - A Rare & Highly Attractive Regency Period Decorated Cabinet
Height: 60 " 153cm
Width: 30" 76cm
Depth: 17 " 45cm
This highly decorative cabinet, with fretwork sided super-structure above a bow fronted cabinet base, is entirely decorated in the oriental style promoted by designers like Sir William Chambers.
This style of decoration is in imitation of Eastern lacquer work, and as such, is populated with traditional oriental motifs. Pagodas, junks, bridges and people are predominant, but there are also peacocks, willow trees and flamingos. The effect is both charming and extremely attractive.
Inside the cabinet are two banks of three short drawers set towards the top of the cabinet, decorated with a lattice work pattern, and retaining their original ebony knobs.
Particularly noteworthy is the remarkably original condition of the decoration. Too often pieces of this period have been over-restored and consequently look new. The decoration on this cabinet has the softness that time alone can impart.
