An Expanding Circular Dining Table by Robert Jupe

A Highly Important Nineteenth century circular expanding patent dining table. The mahogany dining table constructed in superbly figured and faded mahogany. The revolving 'capstan' top having two sets of original insertion leaves allowing for three different sized tables. The top supported on a turned vase shaped column with foliate carving above a platform base, itself supported on four scrolled carved feet.

Robert Jupe, upholder of 47, Welbeck Street, London, patented the design for a circular expanding dining table with removable segmented top in 1835. The specification stated 'an improved expanding table, so constructed that the sections composing the surface may be caused to diverge from a common centre and that the spaces caused thereby may be filled up by inserting leaves or filling pieces'.
